Performer Lineup
Team Red's Terry Calloway
Soon after Rodger Modglin died during a solo appearance at an Oklahoma air show in 2005, Team Red leader Terry "Pumper" Calloway decided to dedicate his Team Red solo performances, and the proceeds he earns this season to a memorial scholarship fund named after his friend.
And the spirit of this unique act, with Calloway flying his Chinese-built Nanchang CJ-6A warbird, will live on. "I have always considered the support members and friends to be a part of the team, and continue to do so. This is more than a one-person effort. And the team mission of providing the audience with a performance that is exciting and original lives on."
The airplane Calloway flies was designed for teaching cadet pilots how to fly aerobatics and on instruments. Some have been equipped with guns and used from ground support by small air forces. Though based on the Soviet designed and built Yakovlev Yak-18A, the Nanchang is a completely different airplane. Relatively large for an air show bird with a wing span of 33.4 feet, the CJ-6, in Calloway's capable hands, appears to be less hyper in the in the air than some other show stoppers. "The maneuvers are not as quick and abrupt, and the performance the viewer sees appears to be more graceful and polished," he explains.
"The final four minutes of my performance will be an aerial ballet, a tribute to Rodger, performed without commentary by the announcer. I did this for the first time last November, and it was very well received."
Terry Calloway will also fly as part of the Redstar's mass formation flybys.
